UPA Govt is ‘Cheating’ Youths by False Job Promises: Modi

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress-led UPA government of making false promises of providing jobs to unemployed youths. “See the Congress manifesto, it says we will give jobs to people from each family. In 2009, they said one crore jobs will be given. Has it happened?,” Modi told a gathering at the Swami Vivekanand Youth Convention in Patan.

“Why are they cheating youths like this? If someone cheats, we cannot forgive. It is not our nature to cheat,” he said.

Modi was reacting to state Congress unit’s announcement that it would provide jobs to 10 lakh youths in the state, if voted to power.

Elections in Gujarat are scheduled later this year.

The government in Delhi is cheating the youths of Gujarat, while we are bringing industrial development in the state,” Modi said.

“As per GoI survey estimates, 72 percent of jobs created in India are coming from Gujarat,” he said to assert his viewpoint.

“Please don’t have expectations from Delhi.”

“Over 3.5 lakh people have got jobs in last one decade rule of Gujarat government. One lakh more will get jobs,” he said.

If any youth wishes to start his own venture, the Gujarat government will back him for providing bank loans, Modi announced.

“These are not small decisions. It’s not my courage but the faith I have in you. Our youngsters will not do wrong…I have the faith,” Modi said stressing that his government had faith in the state’s youth force.

Modi also criticised the Centre for putting a cap of six cylinders per family, saying it “lacked vision on the issue”.

If the Gujarat government was permitted to lay gas pipelines it would had resulted in saving five crore LPG cylinders, that would have considerably brought down subsidy burden on exchequer, Modi said.

He also accused the Centre of delaying expansion of state gas grid network by imposing a ban on laying of gas pipelines.

“Thinking Modi‘s clout will grow, the Centre imposed a ban two years ago on gas pipeline laying in Gujarat, saying only they (Centre) can do this,” he alleged. The decision has been challenged in the Supreme Court, he said.

According to Modi, the move would have let people avail cheaper LPG and could have reduced subsidy burden on the country’s exchequer.Comparing the Centre and state’s policy on LPG, Modi said, “They decided to give six gas cylinders per family as the subsidy burden falls heavy, but we laid 2,200 km pipeline network at a cost of 10,000 crore and provided cheap gas to seven lakh households, a first of its kind initiative in India.”

The Gujarat government targets to provide 20 lakh households with piped gas connections, Modi added.

The World’s Oldest Dental Filling Was Made of Beeswax

The discovery of a 6,500-year-old piece of beeswax provides insight into the origins of dentistry.

Beeswax placed on top of this cracked tooth may be the earliest example of therapeutic dentistry. (PLoS One)

In a paper published this week in PLoS One, a multidisciplinary group at Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy reports that an analysis of a human jaw found over a century ago in Slovenia shows evidence for what may be the earliest case of a therapeutic filling in human history.

The jawbone belongs to what would have been a man in his late twenties who lived during the Neolithic period. A vertical crack on his left canine had exposed some of the inner enamel and tissues within the tooth called dentin. To patch the problem, somebody — it’s not clear whether the procedure was done before or after the man died — stuffed the hole with beeswax. Given the degree of dental damage, researchers who examined the jaw believe it would’ve been pretty painful, and that the beeswax was used to reduce discomfort in the tooth.

The remains were unearthed over 100 years ago, but the filling managed to escape notice until now — possible nobody knew to look for it. Examples of ancient dentistry are extremely rare. In any case, after discovering the filling, scientists used carbon dating to find out how old the beeswax was, and even created a digital 3D model of the original tooth.

Kingfisher Taking its Last Breath!

Chairman of Kingfisher Airlines, Vijay Mallya has been an example of one should not run a business. With few services left with the company and shareholders barking at him, however, Mallya still is not in a position to give in.

It seems that Mallya entered into the business for the glamour it brought, rather from having real understanding of the industry. In the U. S., the last 30 years have witnessed nothing less than 50 airline bankruptcies. With high fuel prices and related costs, success in aviation industry in India is not an easy achievement as well. In the country there have been at least 10 failures since the opening of aviation to the private sector in the 1990s.

Mallya might not have done research on it before diversifying his business into an unrelated sector. He might have taken up the challenge thinking of repeating his success, which he enjoyed in his liquor business. Mallya did create the best airline brand in Kingfisher. Passengers were opting for Kingfisher than Air India or Jet, as Mallya had introduced a no-expenses-spared approach to Kingfisher First Class. But, then he bought Air Deccan at a huge premium, which stood contradictory to the cut-rate carriers of the company.

And at the worst, he staked entire of his liquor business to save his sinking airline. Today, he is having talks with Diageo to sell a stake in United Spirits, since he had pledged too much of his liquor business and his personal assets to keep Kingfisher flying. He told his shareholders that he is in talks with foreign airlines to sell a stake. However, the point to notice here is why any foreign airline would want to buy a stake in such a sinking company.

Attacks on the KFA

Many shareholders were critical of how the company’s debt had spiraled out of control and the fact that the management had not taken active steps to prevent it. Some of them called the management ineffective and asked for a managerial change. They also added that if it is not fulfilled, the government’s move to allow foreign direct investment into the civil aviation sector wouldn’t be of much help to the company.

According to the report came in Business Standard, some of the shareholders of the company opined that the dismal stature of the company has affected the UB Group. And yet others were sad that the employees of the airlines were not paid their salaries since the last few months.

It is reported that Kingfisher Airlines continues to default on its service tax outstandings, amounting of over 60 crore, and the government’s move to allow FDI in civil aviation sector only offers a ray of hope for the company to recover the dues, as the department has frozen most of the accounts of the ailing airlines. The company has failed depositing the service tax collected from the passengers with the department since November 2011 on a regular basis.

Presently the Airlines is having 7,000 crore in accumulated debt in 17 banks and around an equal amount of losses. It has lost about four slots in the Mumbai airport. Kingfisher currently operates only around 80 services a day with just 15 operational aircrafts, which used to operate 360 flights a day, Business Standard reports.

Mallya assures the Shareholders

As the shares have started showing a better status in the market, Mallya is setting forth to counter the shareholder attacks. “I am a businessman and I will sell businesses at the right price,” he said to Business Standard.
At Kingfishers Airlines’ annual general meeting (AGM), the Chairman assured the angry shareholders that he would get the company back in shape. Mallya told the shareholders while the situation was tough, all efforts to recapitalize the company had been made. He also criticized media being negative about his shares.

Deccan Herald reports that, in his initial remarks at the AGM meet, Mallya said that KFA has a fleet of 12 aircraft that fly 40 destinations. He added that during the past eight months of this fiscal year, the promoters of the company have infused 1,154 crore into it, proving that the management is committed to the welfare of the company. And in his concluding words he said we need God’s blessing and luck to save this company.

Narendra Modi calls for a mass movement against gutka in Gujarat

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday appealed to the people of the state to launch a mass movement against gutka.

“This is the time to rise to the occasion together and create a mass movement to remove gutka from our lives and save our youth from the menace of cancer,” Modi wrote on his blog, while reminding people about the new legislation banning gutka in the state from September 11.

“Come 11th September 2012, there will be a comprehensive ban on gutka consumption across the state. It is our determination to create a society where no woman is widowed due to hazards of gutka eating in the family. We want to see a day when no child loses a parent or no mother prematurely loses a son due to gutka consumption,” Modi said.

Drawing attention of the people towards the dangers of gutka, he said, “The menace of gutka is much more serious than what you would like to believe it would be. You will be shocked to know that gutka is even more expensive than almonds. But those who consume it never realise this and move towards a path of self-destruction, from which, there is no return.”

The chief minister has also appealed to people to use social networking media as a tool to spread awareness about the gutka menace.

“Social media users may like to take up the cause on that platform by posting & spreading messages. This is how together we can take small steps that will make a big difference,” he added.

Gutka has been banned in other states including Maharashtra.

Sounds of Alien Birds in Space Recorded by NASA Spacecraft

A NASA spacecraft has made the clearest record yet of choruses of noise in the Earth’s magnetosphere.

The chirps and whoops were captured by one of NASA’s two recently launched Radiation Belt Storm Probes spacecraft, whose mission is to understand more about space weather.

“My wife calls it ‘alien birds,’” joked experiment principal investigator Craig Kletzing, an astronomer at the University of Iowa.

The twin RBSP spacecraft are exploring the magnetosphere, an area where solar particles add energy to the Earth’s magnetic environment, leading to a release of energy in the Van Allen radiation belt.
