Etisalat auction: How much for 050-7777777 VIP number?


Properties, cars and vanity number plates have been auctioned before in the UAE, but now its VIP mobile numbers.

Etisalat, a telecommunication services and technology company, has put 70 numbers on the Emirates Auction website with only seven of them (050-7777777, 050-7777770, etc) listed in the diamond plus category.

“The prices may be disclosed a week before the auction on our website and if not then it will be revealed only at the venue,” a call center executive of Emirates Auction.

“You will have to bring a signed cheque and hand it over to the person at the auction. If you bid and win, you will have to put the amount on the cheque handed over.”

The auction will be held on March 8 at Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi and Armani Hotel, Dubai.

Etisalat has said that part of the auction revenue will be used to support Khalifa Foundation programmes, while another part will be used to support Etisalat’s CSR projects.

The auction is part of the company’s continuous efforts to support social responsibility programmes and was announced during the signing of an agreement with the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation and Emirates Auction at Etisalat’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

According to Emirates Auction website, there are seven diamond plus numbers, 25 diamond numbers, 18 platinum numbers and 20 gold numbers.

The above categories include different packages, with the buyer of the Diamond Plus number getting 22,500 local minutes per month for 2 years, 2,250 international minutes per month for 2 years, 100GB data per month for 2 years, 22,500 local SMS per month for 2 years, 300 incoming roaming minutes per month for 2 years, the latest smartphone and a dedicated customer care.

The package for Diamond numbers includes 7,500 local minutes per month for 2 years, 750 international minutes per month for 2 years, 20GB data per month for 2 years, 7,500 local SMS per month for 2 years, 100 incoming roaming minutes per month for 2 years, a smartphone and a dedicated customer care.

Buyers of Platinum number will get 2,500 local minutes per month for 2 years, 100 international minutes per month for 2 years, 10GB Data per month for 2 years and 2,500 Local SMS per month for 2 years, a smartphone and a dedicated customer care, while Gold number buyers get 850 local minutes per month for 2 years, 50 international minutes per month for 2 years, 5GB data per month for 2 years and 850 local SMS per month for 2 years, a smartphone and a dedicated customer care.

Samsung sells 110-inch ultra-HD TV for $150,000


Samsung said a 110-inch TV that has four times the resolution of standard high-definition TVs is going on sale for about $150,000 in South Korea.

The launch Monday of the giant television set reflects global TV makers’ move toward ultra HD TVs, as manufacturing bigger TVs using OLED proves too costly.

Last year, Samsung and rival LG Electronics, the world’s top two TV makers, touted OLED as the future of TV. OLED screens are ultrathin and can display images with enhanced clarity and deeper color saturation.

But Samsung and LG failed to make OLED TVs a mainstream that would replace the LCD television sets and still struggling to mass produce larger and affordable TVs with OLED. Meanwhile, Japanese media reported last week that Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. decided to end their OLED partnership.

Demand for U-HD TVs is expected to rise despite dearth of content while its price will likely come down faster than that of the OLED TVs. Much of the growth is forecast to come from China, a major market for the South Korean TV makers. Chinese TV makers have been making a push into the U-HD TV market as well.

According to NPD DisplaySearch, global sales of ultra-HD TV sets will surge from 1.3 million this year to 23 million in 2017. More than half of the shipments will be taken by Chinese companies between 2013 and 2017, according to NPD.

While Chinese TV makers have been seeking to boost sales of U-HD TVs with a lower price and a smaller size, Samsung’s strategy is to go bigger with a higher price tag. Samsung’s 110-inch U-HD TV measures 2.6 meters by 1.8 meters. It will be available in China, the Middle East and Europe. In South Korea, the TV is priced at 160 million won ($152,000) while prices in other countries vary.

Samsung said it received 10 orders for the latest premium TVs from the Middle East. Previously, the largest U-HD TV made by Samsung was 85-inch measured diagonally.

The ultra-HD TVs are also known as “4K” because they contain four times more pixels than an HD TV.

Tata Teleservices To Offer Free Voice Minutes For Viewing Mobile Ads


In a bid tap into the growing mobile advertisement market, Tata Teleservices will soon start offering subscribers free voice minutes for viewing ads on their handsets before making calls.
It has tied-up with a few companies to show their ads, a move that will add to Tata Tele revenues. The company will launch the service in partnership with mAdcall, a sister concern of Astute systems.
‘GET’, a mobile advertising application will be available on the GSM as well as CDMA networks (Docomo and Indicom brands) and is compatible with Android, Java, Symbian and Blackberry. The application can also be accessed over Wi-Fi and Tata Docomo Internet.

Tata Tele has over 63 million subscribers across India.
The application enables video advertising on mobile and users can choose when or where they want to view a video commercial on their phone.

A company official said: “Users will be offered free voice minute, per advertisement viewed on their Docomo data enabled handset, for both pre-and post-pay customers.”
He added mobile users opting for the service will not be charged for data while using Tata Docomo Internet.
The advertisement will play on the handset without buffering on 2G, 3G or CDMA network.
“Users will be instantly rewarded with one minute of local or national talk-time for each advertisement viewed,” the official said.

It is the first operator to launch this application on GSM and CDMA technology in India, he added.
According to a recent report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International on digital advertising, 105 crore were spent on mobile ads in 2011-12.
The report said the number of active mobile Internet users had reached 48 million by March 2012 and as a result, advertisements placed on mobile phones and tablets are increasingly becoming commonplace.

The company is of the view that the application will benefit advertisers as they will get accuracy in data, as to who watched the video and when.
“The mobile users are not offered any ads if they are trying to make emergency calls, given the nature of the call being made. Also no ads are offered while making calls to toll free numbers, international calls or while in roaming in off-network locations,” the official said.

Google honours ‘Human Computer’ Shakuntala Devi with calculator-styled doodle on her 84th birth anniversary


On Monday, Google paid tribute through its doodle to Shakuntala Devi on her  84th birth anniversary with a calculator font and her picture.

Popularly known as the Human Computer for her awesome ability to mentally solve complex mathematical problems, Shakuntala Devi was included in The Guinness Book of World Records in 1982.

Without any formal education as a child, Shakuntala Devi had the ability to memorise and calculate numbers mentally an ability her circus artist father discovered when she was just three.

A prolific author as well, she wrote books like Fun with Numbers, Astrology for You, Puzzles to Puzzle You, and Mathablit.

In 1977 in USA, Shakuntala Devi competed with a computer to see who gives the cube root of 188132517 faster, she won.

On June 18, 1980, the Human computer, Shakuntala Devi demonstrated the multiplication of two 13-digit numbers 7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,779 picked at random by the Computer Department of Imperial College, London. She answered 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 in 28 seconds which is correct. This event is mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records.

With the ability to calculate the cube root of 61,629,875, and the seventh root of 170,859,375 without writing it down or using a calculator, Shakuntala Devi’s abilities were studied by Arthur Jensen, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1988.

Jensen wrote in his report that the calculation was done and answers given even before he wrote the answer in his notebook. The findings were published in the academic journal Intelligence in 1990.

In April 2013, Shakuntala Devi passed away in a hospital in Bangalore from complications of the heart and kidneys at the age of 83.
