Indian Dignitaries Who Once Tasted Humiliation in the US

The most recent spat of a deputy consul general at the Indian Consulate in New York, Devyani Khobragade over a visa fraud has once again highlighted how Indians are battered in the foreign country in spite of holding a high official post. Here are the noted personalities who were detained or underwent a pat-down search while passing through or during their stay in United States, reports Yahoo India.

APJ Abdul Kalam

APJ

APJ Abdul Kalam, the 11th president of India and the first scientist to hold the post was also once targeted during his visit to the U.S. There, he was twice frisked at New York’s JFK Airport with U.S. security officials even taking his jacket and shoes to check for explosives and also by staff of Continental Airlines at New Delhi airport. This was one such incident that left India fuming. Later, a written apology to Kalam and the Indian government was sent by the U.S. stating, “Appropriate procedure for expedited screening of dignitaries had not been followed”.

George Fernandes

GF

George Fernandes, former Defence Minister has claimed that he was strip searched twice at Dulles Airport in the U.S. Capital area, during an official visit as a defense minister to Washington in early 2002 and again while en route to Brazil in mid-2003. Later, the then United States Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Armitage, personally apologized to Fernandes over the incident.
“Just as we were saying good-bye to Fernandes, a member of our delegation innocently asked him when he would next be coming to Washington. His demeanor abruptly changed. It was as though he was glad to have an excuse to tell us how he really felt about our country,” recalls Richard.

Meera Shankar

MS

Meera Shankar, the Indian ambassador to the U.S. between 2009 and 2011, was subjected to a pat-down search in December 2010 by security personnel at Mississippi, Jackson-Evers International airport though she was travelling on a diplomatic passport. The reason behind the security search was nothing but wearing traditional attire—sari. The hands-on search also embarrassed the university officials who invited Meera Shankar to give a speech for an international studies program at Mississippi State University.

Shah Rukh Khan

SRK

The king Khan of Bollywood, who arrived in the U.S. to visit the Yale University, was detained for over two hours at a New York airport in 2009 and 2012. Shah Rukh Khan was accompanied by Nita Ambani when they arrived in a private plane at the New York’s White Plain airport. Media sources stated that while everybody else was cleared by the immigration immediately, Khan was stopped for over two hours before being cleared by the immigration officials. On another incident, he was detained at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey when he had gone to promote his movie ‘My Name is Khan’, which ironically was about racial profiling of Muslims in the U.S. “Nothing seemed to convince the immigration officer, even when other officers (who recognized me) vouched for me. I feel angry and humiliated,” Shahrukh said afterwards.

Praful Patel

PP

Former union minister Praful Patel, who was in Chicago for attending an official engagement was detained at the O’Hare airport in Chicago in September 2010. He was held for questioning as his name and date of birth matched with those of a man on America’s watch list. Despite telling the immigration authorities that he was a minister in the Indian government, they kept asking him why he was visiting the U.S. and whether he had stayed in the country earlier.

Azam Khan

AK

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister and senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has alleged that he was insulted at the Boston airport in April 2013. Khan, who was accompanying state Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for a Harvard University event in the U.S., was detained briefly for questioning. Khan also alleged that officials at the Boston Airport not just frisked him but also misbehaved with him.

Hardeep Puri

HP

Hardeep Puri, India’s former UN envoy was detained for more than 30 minutes in a holding room at Houston Airport after refusing to remove his turban in December 2010. Puri refused to do the same as Sikh men are expected to keep their heads covered in public at all times. It is even forbidden to touch the head dress in public as it symbolizes self-respect, honour and piety.

Irfan Khan

IK

Irrfan Khan, a noted Indian actor who worked in Oscar-winning films like ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘Life of Pi’ and ‘Spider-Man’, was also detained twice at the U.S. airports at Los Angeles airport in 2008 and at New York airport in 2009. Irrfan said,  “It’s humiliating. They don’t even disclose the reason,” reports PTI. “The policemen with big guns just take you to a room and ask you to sit. They don’t allow you to speak to anybody, nor use cellphones. And after long waits, they come and simply say ‘Go, please go’, he added.

Neil Nitin Mukesh

NNM

Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh was detained at an airport in the U.S. for over an hour because the immigration officials refused to believe that he is an Indian. Neil said that the incident happened when he arrived in New York to shoot for Kabir Khan’s film ‘New York’ which has a backdrop of 9/11 terror attacks, reports PTI.

Laws needed to give lokpal teeth

“This is not about one Bill; this is about the framework and we would like to deliver that framework to the country.” Rahul Gandhi said so, in a rare intervention in LS before the Lokpal Bill’s passage. It was an appeal to the 15th LS that, besides Lokpal, it should “consider and enact all six pending anti-corruption Bills before its term expires”.

He proposed that the winter session be extended “to complete our unfinished work in our fight against corruption”. Law minister Kapil Sibal made a similar request in RS, “Let’s try and work extra hours to bring these Bills to the House and to have them passed.” Though the House has been adjourned indefinitely, the proposal of reconvening it merits serious consideration, as demanded by Aruna Roy on behalf of civil society — more so because there is apparently a political consensus in favour of these legislations.

Since the term of the 15th LS has been marred by scams, there cannot be a more fitting way of signing off than carrying out this “unfinished work” to complement the Lokpal legislation. Consider the difference each of these Bills could make once passed.

Right of Citizens for Time Bound Delivery of Goods and Services and Redressal of their Grievances Bill, 2011: As Arun Jaitley pointed out in RS, Parliament was obliged to pass this Bill to honour its 2011commitment before Anna Hazare broke his fast. One of the three clauses of the Sense of the House resolution passed then was a promise to enact a citizen’s charter for every public authority. This Bill subsequently introduced seeks to create a mechanism under which the charter will detail goods and services to be provided and their delivery timelines.

The proposed mechanism will have to redress within 30 days grievances related to the charter, functioning of the public authority and violations of a law or policy. It provides for the appointment of central and state public grievance redressal commissions, which will fine errant officers up to Rs 50,000. While Lokpal will deal with corruption, this Bill is about grievances like potholed roads or failure to supply ration cards.

Whistleblowers Protection Bill, 2011: The government came up with this Bill to strengthen safeguards for whistleblowers. It widened the whistleblower definition to include not just a conscientious public servant exposing corruption but also “any other person” including NGOs so that even RTI activists get similar protection. Disclosures of whistleblowers could be about an act of corruption, misuse of power or any criminal offence by public servants.

Under this, whistleblower can make his disclosure in confidence to the central or state vigilance commission. Anyone disclosing the complainant’s identity will be penalized. It imposes a penalty on whistleblowers if they knowingly make false complaints.

Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill 2010: This lays down enforceable standards of conduct for SC and HC judges. Sixteen of the 18 enumerated standards are derived from SC’s code of conduct for judges and requires judges to declare their and their kin’s assets and liabilities. Given the need to maintain judicial independence, it creates three mechanisms to deal with complaints on grounds of misbehaviour or incapacity. Once a complaint is filed, the proposed Judicial Oversight Committee will serve as first check. It will be a five-member body comprising two serving judges, a retired judge, attorney general and an eminent person. In keeping with the practice in countries like UK and US, this panel will allow non-judicial members to evaluate complaints.

If the complaint is in order, the oversight committee will forward it to the Scrutiny Panel comprising judicial members. Two of the three members will be judges sitting in the same court as the judge against whom there is a complaint. If the scrutiny committee is convinced of the complaint’s truthfulness, it will be referred to the Investigation Committee, which will have civil court powers. Penalties that may arise from this network of committees could range from an advisory to public censure of a sitting judge. This may also lead to a recommendation to the President for a judge’s removal.

Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill 2013: After the coal scam, the government came up with a radical proposal scrapping the notion of punishing somebody for corruption even when there is no quid pro quo or bribery. The proposed amendment seeks to delete the clause in the corruption law against “misuse of official position to extend undue favours”. This will ensure that a public servant isn’t booked for a judgment error on his part unless there’s evidence of graft.

This introduces the need for sanction to prosecute retired bureaucrats, joint secretary and above and strengthens the investigating agency’s power to go after bribe givers.

The Prevention of Bribery of Foreign Public Officials Bill: It penalizes Indian companies and individuals bribing foreign state or international agency officials.

Public Procurement Bill: It seeks to ensure transparency in procurement by the Central government and its entities. It exempts procurements for disaster management or strategic purposes, and those below Rs 50 lakh. It sets open competitive bidding as preferred procurement method and mandates publication of all information on a portal.

Fitness Secrets of the Little Master #ThankYouSachin

14th  of November 2013 and Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar took his final bow and ascend to ‘cricket heaven’ to shine even brighter than he did when he walked amongst mere mortals. The God metaphor perhaps comes closest to describing the ‘Maelstrom’ who bats at No 4. The Nemesis of every fast bowler…the run machine…the master blaster…little master et al.

  BZAhr8hIAAAzA4I.jpg large

When it comes to sheer stickability nobody can surpass ‘Amcha Sachin’, for truly- over two decades he has been a permanent fixture in the Indian cricket team which in itself is a feat beyond compare. Fellow players may have come and gone, the game may have changed form and gotten more demanding but nothing ever changed about the ever dependable ‘Amcha Sachin’.

He has applied himself to his life i.e. cricket and enjoyed it in all its forms whether displaying legendary batting prowess & technique to create colossal records, being the master strategist to even playing mentor to a young Indian team. The genius of Tendulkar knows no parallel and I suspect can have none either.

Can his record of 200 tests and 51 Test centuries and others be beaten? Perhaps! Records after all are meant to be broken. Sooner or later someone probably might get lucky enough. However, can that person surpass Sachin’s other achievements? Can he carry off with ease the weight of the aspirations of a billion Indians the way Sachin has done since the tender age of 16? Can he create records in all forms of the game- test, one day and T20?

Can this pretender to the throne actually be the choked feeling in a hundred million throats as he walks in to bat? Can he make millions of mothers & grannies who despite not understanding a thing about cricket pray feverishly for this little giant to do well, to score those centuries and bail India out? Can he disrupt train schedules when batting at 99? If anyone can surpass that then only can he claim to have beaten the God who bats at no 4 and wears the NO.10 Indian Blue!

One can’t really help wonder as to what it is that makes this little man a giant. What secret diet or exercise regimen does he follow that has seen him through 23 years of grueling cricket? What is that X factor that makes Sachin the maximum run getter and an absolute lightening streak on the field? Pure luck or happenstance, lucky breaks, a good teacher, an early start what? Or could it after all have something to do with the 3Ds of success? DISCIPLINE DETERMINATION AND DEVOTION. Words that are mere words for most but a way of life for the rare few!

main-qimg-4861140d9275e1296a782f3236f0c265

It’s not that Sachin hasn’t had his share of injuries after all if you have been playing cricket since your school days and for over two decades facing some of the meanest pace attack plus running about on the field you are bound to take some battering. However Sachin Tendulkar despite a tennis elbow condition, pulled hamstring and countless injuries has still emerged fit and can give any youngster an absolute RUN for the money.

There is even a photo gallery dedicated to Sachin’s injuries. So for a chronological run down on his injuries you can refer to http://indiatoday.intoday.in/gallery/sachin-tendulkars-injuries/1/5450.html.

main-qimg-5e93fa62bfe45ba6a6e67eb83ee73440

So what does Sachin eat?

It is quite disappointing to know that there isn’t a Sachin Tendulkar secret diet. Or if it were a secret diet he obviously isn’t telling. A self confessed foodie Sachin loves food especially lobsters and Mangoes. He eats a bit of everything when off the field and during cricketing season he is on his prescribed diet of 40% carbohydrate, 30% fat and 30% protein. Could that be responsible for his quick running between the wickets we wonder.

Diet during Matches
His diet intake consists of 40% carbohydrate, 30% fat and 30% protein.

  • Breakfast – Big bowl of porridge + 200ml milk + water with a tsp of sucrose and raisins if desired and 250ml fresh fruit juiceTea/coffee
  • After workout – 25g whey protein power
  • Snack – Sandwich with part of grilled fish or low fat soft cheese with fruits
  • Lunch – 3 chapattis + olive oil based spread with fish or cereal, 100g mixed raisin & nut, freshly prepared salad, 1 bowl Low fat yoghurt
  • Cricket training – Large amount of water with electrolyte
  • After training – Protein shake, 100g mixed raisin and nuts, fresh fruits
  • Dinner – Similar to lunch

Dedication and devotion are simply not possible without concentration and well what one can say about that. Imagine the roar and din of the spectators especially when you are batting on enemy turf. The ability to fade out external noises and simply concentrate on the ball which comes down at you at a speed of 155 Km/h must take some ability. That’s what adds to the mystique of Tendulkar – The ability to concentrate.  Must be something in that ‘walk down the pitch and tap the bat ritual’ which he is seen to do often in between deliveries.

As though enough hasn’t been said about Sachin’s qualities another one comes up and that is his pain threshold according to Dr SN Omkar, who was the Indian team’s yoga instructor in the early 2000s. Sachin took to Yoga quite naturally and that helped him in every aspect of the game right from enduring and healing injuries to enhancing his natural stroke play and above all the ability to have phenomenal concentration.  Sachin also undertook training with Yoga Guru BKS Iyengar after he suffered from a pulled hamstring and has over the years attended several yoga sessions to get his battle ravaged body back in shape.

Ultimately there must be some X factor at work that goes beyond all normal human qualities. Some call it the hand of destiny or luck. Imagine how easily one could get swayed by all the fame and adulation that has come Sachin Tendulkar’s way. A lesser mortal could have gone completely berserk by a fraction of the attention that Sachin has today. What keeps him grounded and sensible? Mediation is something Sachin does regularly and according to him that is what keeps him grounded and modest enough to take his ‘God Status’ with ease.  So that’s one more point in the making of a legend – Physical fitness , diet, right exercise, meditation for mental equilibrium and of course the external factors of a supportive and closely knit family .

So essentially to become Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar one must have all those factors like physical prowess, mental strength & disposition, opportunity and the ability to encash on it , attitude, fighting spirit, determination, devotion, discipline, ability to concentrate and learn, adaptability, self esteem, the blessings and encouragement of family and a teacher who helps bring out the best in you…  ALL THESE …..COINCIDING AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME!  To draw a parallel isn’t that just like how life happened on earth? A series of JUST RIGHT factors that came together at the right time to make life possible on earth? Just the way it uncannily makes Gods of cricket possible, that only once in a lifetime phenomenon called SACHIN RAMESH TENDULKAR, the God, who according to Amul will make India “Retire Hurt” on the 14th of November 2013.

Facebook can predict when you‘re headed for break up

Scientists have developed a Facebook algorithm which they say can accurately identify who you’re dating and when you’re in danger of breaking up.
facebook-can-predict-when-youre-headed-for-break-up

The algorithm developed by a Cornell University professor and a senior Facebook engineer takes advantage of a new metric system called “disperson,” which looks at connections between people who have different sets of friends.

Researchers say close friends are likely to share a lot of friends in common, which social scientists call “embeddedness”.

The researchers used multiple sets of anonymous data, including a large data set1.3 million Facebook users

They identified with 60 per cent accuracy who was dating whom, much better than the 2 per cent accuracy they’d getrandom guessing, ‘The Verge‘ reported.

High dispersion also seems to be correlated with longer relationships, researchers said.

Couples were 50 per cent more likely to break up in the next two months if the dispersion algorithm failed to guess that they were dating, the study found.

Resaerchers also looked at metrics such as how many times a user viewed another person’s profile, attendance at the same events, and messages sent.

Dispersion turned out to be the most overall accurate metric for determining romantic relationships.

10 Ways Android Beats iOS 7

When new, colorful, vibrant OSs, like Android and Windows Phone, were making their head ways in to consumer‘s psyche, iOS remained nearly still since its debut. iOS 7 is the first attempt by Apple at change. It turned out to be complete aesthetic overhaul of the interface. From the moment you turn on an iPhone running iOS 7, it’s different—every option, every app. The OS also sports amazing features like the Control Center, Lock Screen, Gestures Contorls, Slide to Unlock, Touch ID. All said and done, Android can still beat iOS in 10 ways, read on to know them as compiled by Business Insider.

#10 Endless Sharing Options

ZgTl9V14
The new iOS helps the user to share the content of the handset through only a few choices like Message, Mail, Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. But Android opens up the endless options for the sharing task. It can list out all the apps that are capable of sharing the content, be it Mail, Whats App or WeChat . The capability also gives the consumers to try out many sharing apps that are flooding the Google Play Store.

#9 Third-party Software Keyboards

iJ4KD5TN
There not many complaints about the typing experience on iOS 7, but Android still offers more options. The Jelly Bean models already come with the easy-to-use and fairly self-explanatory Swype, the users can dive in to Play Store for third party alternatives.

#8 More Customization

39zRpyOM
Android offers you much option to customize the handset to suite your taste. If you don’t like your home screen try Nova Launcher or a fake Windows Phone 8. With Jelly Bean 4.3 you can get to make different accounts, each one having only selected apps. This especially useful when kids gets hands on your phone. So the iOS 7 offers no such liberty to the users.

#7 Visible File System

8J3VfxI6
When you connect your Android phone to your PC, you can see the content of your phone displayed on the monitor as if you just connoted a pen drive. It makes it as easy as to transfer files between two folders of the computer. With Apple, there is a tedious process of converting files to the compatible form before they could be transferred on to iOS devices.

#6 Better Notifications Bar

K39zW0DU
Notification Center gets a huge overhaul and things are pretty different in iOS 7. Now you have notifications from the calendar showing what’s coming up, as well as a quick summary of the weather. The overcrowded notification can annoy you. And iOS7 only displays the updates, like new mail or SMS, but you have to go the apps to see the content you just received.   However with Android’s notification drawer, you can take action and respond without opening whatever app.

#5 Images with Contact List

N3uC80Fk
Android can automatically import photos for your contacts from the contacts email accounts. Which makes it a lot easier to see your friends contact pictures in your virtual address book than it is with iOS 7.

#4 Google Now Trumps Siri

fZ9OHk15
Google Search is the most preferred search engine by the masses. Google Now is extremely quick and can parse web pages to find the most relevant information. On the other hand, Siri produces results from Microsoft’s Bing search engine. However Siri can be appreciative when it comes to “assistant” commands, like when you want to set up an internal calendar event.

#3 Multimedia Ease

vlX6Dc3d
Android is fine with your music files, let it come from anywhere. There are bevy of music players like Play Music and Power Amp. However even with all the new things iOS 7 has brought, you require iTunes if you want to load your iPhone up with songs.  In the same way you need other intermediate software to convert photos and videos to be compatible with iOS devices, where as with Android, just transfer and enjoy.

#2 More Free Applications

Jo649UN5

Though Google Play doesn’t offer better quality apps than App Store, there are plenty of free apps that can fulfill your specific needs.

#1 Unlock Options

r240y8d1

With Android you can unlock the phone to any app you want, like accessing contacts, camera or messages, from single unlocking swipe. The new iPhone 5S fingerprint scanner is pretty cool, but it doesn’t offer cool options like Android does for unlocking.

Latest Smartphones With Jaw-Dropping Features #Android #iOS7 #BBM

The competition in Smartphone market is currently measured on the basis of the mind-blowing features in handsets—something users didn’t experienced before. Samsung has already released the first Smartphone in world with a flexible screen and LG is following the same route. Nokia in the meantime is having the world’s first ever Smartphone with 41 MP camera.  There are many others who are bringing revolutionary features like rotating camera and 4K recording into devices. The verve to excel has led to these devices that sport first ever features— read to know 10 of them as compiled by Gizbot.

#1 Motorola Moto X: Worlds First Smartphone That You Can Customize
