Google Doodle celebrates John Wisden the creator of ‘the Bible of Cricket’

Google has celebrated the 187th anniversary of the birth of English cricketer, and creator of ‘the Bible of Cricket‘, John Wisden.

Born in Brighton on September 5, 1826, little is known about Wisden’s early life.

Following the death of his father he was cared for by the notable wicket keeper Tom Box who encouraged his cricketing abilities.

He made his debut for Sussex at 18 years of age.

At the peak of his powers, Wisden, who went on to play 187 first-class cricket matches for Kent, Middlesex and Sussex, was known as ‘The Little Wonder’.

He is widely considered to have been the best all-rounder of his day.

Despite his significant cricketing achievements, Wisden is today most famous for creating the eponymous ‘Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack’ after retiring from the game.

The Almanack was first published in 1864 and a new volume has appeared every year since then. Wisden 2013 is therefore the 150th edition.

When it was first published the Almanack printed ‘full and accurate scores’ along with facts about the Derby, the St Leger, the university rowing matches ‘and other Interesting Information’.

It has been published every year without fail since its creation despite the company coming close to liquidation in 1937.

The Alamanck was even published during the war years, despite the company’s headquarters being set on fire by a German bomber – destroying their records.

This remarkable continued publication makes the Almanack the longest running sports annual in history. Today a copy of the original 1864 edition is valued at around £25,000.

John Wisden died of cancer, aged 57, in London. He is buried in Brompton Cemetery.

Today’s Doodle celebrates the Almanack using the distinctive front cover font of the Almanack against the famous yellow background that has been used on every edition since 1938.

The Doodle also features its own take on the famous woodcut of two cricketers, by Eric Ravilious, which regularly appeared on covers up until 2003 when it was replaced by a photograph of a contemporary cricketer.

Bayern oust Manchester United as top brand

European champions are now valued at $860 million

Champions League winners Bayern Munich have overtaken Manchester United as the most valuable brand in world football, according to a report released on Wednesday by London-based consultancy firm Brand Finance.

According to the report, Bayern are now valued at $860 million (669 million euros, £572 million), overtaking last year’s top side United ($837 million) as football’s most lucrative brand.

Spanish giants Real Madrid ($621 million) and Barcelona ($572 million) are third and fourth in the new ranking.

Bayern, who beat domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in Saturday’s Champions League final at London’s Wembley Stadium, have seen their brand value increase by 51 million euros compared to last season, while United’s value has dropped by 20 million euros.

“The challenge now for all Bundesliga clubs and the league itself is to see if they can export their domestic brand strength into global opportunities,” said Brand Finance’s CEO David Haigh.

Interest in Bayern from overseas fans has shot up this season, with one million Munich replica shirts expected to be sold in 2013, compared to 600,000 in the 2012 calendar year.

By comparison, Dortmund have sold around 350,000 replica shirts this season.

The report’s figures were calculated using a formula based on future turnover attributable to the brand name and reflect Bayern’s growing power, with the Bavarians poised to become the first German club to win the treble of European Cup, German Cup and league titles.

“It’s a record year in terms of turnover, as we’ll break the 400 million euros turnover mark for the first time,” said club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“No German club has ever been close before. Propelled by our success on the field, we’re breaking every record off it, too. The club is in great shape for the future.”

Bayern face Stuttgart on Saturday in the German Cup final, having already broken or equalled 25 German league records en route to success in the Bundesliga.

City go to White Hart Lane 13 points behind United

Manchester City’s grip on the Premier League trophy could be prised away once and for all this weekend as Roberto Mancini’s side face Tottenham Hotspur knowing defeat would allow Manchester United the chance to be crowned champions on Monday.

A sense of inevitability has hung over the title race for several weeks but below it, the season is reaching a nerve-jangling climax both in the battle to qualify for next year’s Champions League and to stay in the top flight.

City go to White Hart Lane 13 points behind United, who play Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Monday when the title race could be decided.

City would like nothing more than to prolong the title fight for another week, but that could be scuppered with Tottenham embroiled in a scrap with Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton for third and fourth places.

While City’s pride is at stake, the repercussions of Sunday’s match are likely to be far more serious for Spurs whose hopes of a top-four finish are under threat from their London rivals.

United top the table with 81 points, followed by City on 68, Chelsea 61, Arsenal 60, Spurs 58 and Everton 56. City, Spurs and Chelsea have played 32 games, all the rest 33.

Andre Villas-Boas‘s side were in pole position for third place a few weeks ago before defeats by Liverpool and Fulham and a home draw with Everton handed the initiative back to Arsenal and Chelsea.

Chelsea moved into third spot with a 3-0 win at Fulham on Wednesday to climb a point ahead of Arsenal, held to a 0-0 home draw by Everton on Tuesday.

MORE PRESSURE

Arsenal’s Saturday kickoff at Fulham means they can apply more pressure before Chelsea go to Liverpool and Spurs play City.

Tottenham’s players have had a breather since losing to Basel on penalties in the Europa League, although the break may not have been long enough for Welsh winger Gareth Bale to recover from the ankle injury he sustained in the first leg of the tie.

Without him and the injured Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe, Tottenham are a far less dangerous side and concern is mounting in north London that the club will suffer a near-miss for the second season in a row.

They finished fourth last year but were denied a Champions League spot by Chelsea who finished sixth but won the European Cup to take their place.

Arsenal’s draw with Everton offered encouragement for Spurs who, according to midfielder Lewis Holtby, face “six cup finals” between now and the end of the season.

“It will be a tremendous game on Sunday,” he told Tottenham’s website. “City have just reached the final of the FA Cup and these six games are our cup finals.

“They are a side full of quality players but we’re determined to get three points, especially at home. It would be a massive win for us.”

Everton (56) can move ahead of Tottenham, albeit having played two more games, with victory over Sunderland on Saturday – a match with ramifications at the top and bottom.

Sunderland moved three points clear of the relegation zone with a 3-0 win at Newcastle United last weekend – a match memorable for new manager Paolo Di Canio‘s celebratory knee slide at St James’s Park.

CLOSE FRIEND

The emotional Di Canio coming face to face with Everton’s intense manager David Moyes is an intriguing prospect as is Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp taking on close friend Tony Pulis’s Stoke City in a match that Rangers must win to keep their slim hopes of survival alive.

Along with bottom club Reading, who play Norwich City, QPR are 10 points adrift of 17th-placed Aston Villa.

Stoke, who have lost six of their last seven league games, are nose-diving towards the drop and defeat by QPR would increase the pressure on Pulis whose side begin the weekend just three points above 18th-placed Wigan Athletic who have played a game less than their fellow strugglers.

Wigan, whose annual fight against the drop has this season been interrupted by a run to the FA Cup final, face West Ham on Saturday and will be hoping to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat  by City.

Yes, it’s true: Pope Francis has only one lung

The new pope has daunting challenges ahead ranging from the church sex abuse scandal to reinvigorating the flock.

And Pope Francis will have to do it all with just one lung.

The Argentine pontiff lost the greater part of one lung to a teenage infection. “He feels it today,” says his authorized biographer Sergio Rubin. “He’s a little bit slowed by it, but he’s OK.”

Pope Francis’ one lung doesn’t compromise health

Doctors said that losing one lung doesn’t necessarily compromise the Pope Francis’ health or reduce his life span, though it means no strenuous exercise since he no longer has as much air capacity as people with two lungs. “He probably wouldn’t be able to run marathons, but I don’t think that would be on his schedule,” said Dr. Peter Openshaw, director of the Centre for Respiratory Infection at Imperial College London. “Having one lung should be enough as long as there is no other disease in that lung.”

Openshaw didn’t think a papal schedule would be too taxing for Pope Francis’ one lung, though he noted the pope’s rib cage might look slightly unusual. “His X-ray will probably look rather alarming, but understandable once you know he only has one lung,” he said.

Openshaw said Pope Francis’ existing lung would probably have expanded to fill the space left by the missing one, and that his ribcage would have shrunk slightly in size. His diaphragm may also have moved up slightly higher than normal. But none of those changes should affect Francis’ normal activities, he said.

Experts said it would be rare nowadays to remove a lung. Antibiotics would be used to treat most lung infections including tuberculosis, though part of the organ might be removed to treat advanced lung cancer.

Back when Pope Francis had his lung removed, the available antibiotics weren’t as powerful. “In the past, doctors used to try all kinds of strange things to try to treat lung infections,” said Dr. Jennifer Quint, a respiratory expert at London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She said physicians even used to stick ping pong balls into peoples’ lungs in an attempt to starve the lung of oxygen, to kill the bacteria.

Quint said the fact that Pope Francis appears so fit and healthy at 76 bodes well for his future.

“If he were going to have any major complications from the surgery (to remove the lung), he would have had them by now,” she said. She said Francis’ main challenge will be to keep his remaining lung healthy. “I would recommend a yearly flu vaccination and an occasional pneumonia vaccine to avoid infection,” she said.

Openshaw agreed Pope Francis’ remaining lung should be able to compensate for the missing one, similar to how parts of the brain may pick up functions of other regions damaged by a stroke.

“The other lung can gain capacity but there will be limits,” he said, comparing it to a car engine that now runs slightly slower. “You may not be able to accelerate as hard but it still works just as well.”

Russian Cricket Team Starts Spring Preparations

The United Cricket League Russia is preparing for the 2013 games. The popularity of this sport, which has a great following worldwide, until recently was relatively unknown in Russia, points out Tanvir Khan,a member of the team management. He says that it is not surprising that the vast majority of players in the Russian League are Indians, Pakistanis, natives of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka having Russian residence permits. They are all in the majority of cases, like me, either graduates of Russian universities, businessmen or students.

1012978_28665007

Tanvir Khan: “The United Russian Cricket League unites eight teams of 11 players each. Some of them are very good and great players. Last year, the League of United Russia was recognized and registered with the International Cricket Council (ICC) in London.

We also have 200 additional players. And among them are a few Russians. Our matches are held at the Moscow State University’s (MSU) baseball stadium which has an artificial turf cover. We play every Saturday and Sunday during the four months of favorable weather conditions. These games invariably attract quite a few Russians, some of whom want to try their hand at the game and have shown impressive results.”

Having crossed from Europe, from its homeland in Britain, to the colonies in South Asia and Africa, cricket has become extremely popular there. And now in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka it is revered as a national sport. The young students, who had come to Russia from these countries to study during the past decade or so, just could not give up their passion for cricket. We are organizing matches in Russia for the 13th year and are also participating in international matches, says Tanvir Khan. And very successfully too for we have won Silver in the European championship.

This year we have scheduled 64 games – says board member of the League of United Russia, Tanvir Khan. We expect the arrival in Moscow of teams from Latvia and Estonia. And then we shall visit them in Riga. Our colleagues in Belgium have invited our team for a friendly match. And this is not at all the complete list of our travel plans for which preparations are on going.

On May 1, this year, the Russian team will hold its first home match at the cricket stadium in MSU. It is possible that some Russian players will also take part in the match. This sport is gaining more and more recognition among the Russians.
