In just 24 hours, in the Facebook alumni group of St Stephen’s College, Communications Minister Kapil Sibal‘s ratings crashed faster than that of US President Barack Obama or what former telecom minister A. Raja, now in judicial custody over second generation (2G) spectrum case, ever had.

Reasons Why India Can't Censor the Internet

In a survey to pick star alumni for a big debating clash with counterparts from the rival college across the road, Sibal was on the top five a week ago — among other stellar Stephanians like Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former federal minister Mani Shankar Aiyar or former UN diplomat Shashi Tharoor. No longer!

As the #Idiot hash-tag topped Twitter trends, some withdrew their votes for Sibal, and there were posts like “Chuck him across the road” — a scathing insult, equivalent to the Parsis’ excommunication.

Just a preview of the global firestorm over the next two days!

The fire wasn’t from anonymous teens. Seasoned analysts blasted Sibal. Investor Mahesh Murthy posted: “Censor this! :) ! Five of the top 10 Twitter trends in India right now are: #IdiotKapilsibal, #KapilSibal, #Censorship, #FreeSpeech and #FreedomOfSpeech.”

All this, for just one statement from a politician not unknown for his foot-in-mouth disease? Not quite. For, he has the power to misuse and try to make it happen.

During the Anna Hazare movement, Sibal summoned representatives of the social networks. In a king-and-subjects interaction, he kept them waiting, then kept them standing in his room; gave them a pre-emptive dressing down; and snapped: “I don’t want any anti-government stuff on your networks. Fix it.” There was no room for discussion.

So here’s a five-point Internet 101 for the illustrious Mr. Sibal.

1. The Internet cannot be edited: Duh! In an early Dilbert strip, the pointy-haired boss demanded that Dilbert “download” the Internet and fax it to him. A decade down, it’s not so funny any more.

The Internet is not traditional media. India’s 1975 emergency and the media clampdown was possible because of the linear, broadcast nature of the old media. New media is distributed. No copy desk or censor board can “fix” it. There is no editor to arrest. And, most content is hosted outside India’s jurisdiction.

2. User-generated content cannot be filtered: That would slow down the global Internet to a crawl, with posts appearing after days — even assuming so many “editors” could be hired by, say, a Facebook or a Twitter.

Are phone operators responsible for “content” carried on their networks — or their CEOs arrested if someone made a terror threat over a phone call? No, the telco is simply asked to help with the investigation — into who made the call.

Yes, Internet content has the permanence and public-impact potential that a phone call does not, but equally, it lends itself brilliantly to self-regulation.

3. Peer review works: Wikipedia is the best example. Who could have imagined that a user-created encyclopedia could be so objective, and comprehensive? Yes, anyone can go in and edit anything (barring entries like “Kapil Sibal”, which have been locked due to vandalism!).
If you make an inappropriate change, someone will come in and correct it. And so it is on Facebook or Twitter. Abusive posts will be reported, blocked, and the individuals knocked out of the site.

4. Draconian controls are not necessary: In this age of global cooperation on terror, companies cooperate. A rational request from India to Google or Facebook to bring down offensive content will be heard — regardless of jurisdiction.

5. Yes, there are precedents for Internet control, but…: Such censorship is in countries India doesn’t want to be — China, Pakistan, Myanmar or Saudi Arabia. Pakistan became a laughing stock when it issued a list of banned words for SMS messages. (That list is now standard reading for anyone wanting a quick lesson in present and future abuses that aren’t in any dictionary.)

 The big daddy of “regulation” is China, where everything is filtered, and if you break those filters, you are charged with treason. What a role model.

But wait.
Kapil Sibal knows all this, right? So why is this bright star from Harvard Law School and St. Stephen’s college now sounding so anachronistic in the Internet age? Is it the old “thou shalt display higher loyalty to the royal family than the prince himself” mantra?

If Kapil Sibal is to defend himself against the charge of sycophancy, he is on a weak footing. There were many prior potential triggers for tackling social media, including fanatic religious posts, derogatory comments by Pakistan sympathisers, Anna Hazare, and more. That he finally picked a post that targeted Sonia Gandhi suggests that this was not out of serious, objective concern about India’s stability, security or secular fabric.

It has been over 2 decades since LTTE suicide bomber Dhanu detonated an RDX explosive laden belt that killed Rajiv Gandhi and 14 others. The Gandhi family has come in terms with the tragedies that haunted the family over the years. Long forgotten the history where political decisions cost lives and shattered the dreams of many. Years down the line, forgiveness paved way for a new beginning when Sonia intervened to commute Nalini’s death sentence to life imprisonment and when Priyanka met Nalini at the Vellore Central Prison which Nalini explained a life changing visit.

However, after suffering imprisonment for the past 20 years, death seems to be just a span away for Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan as President Pratibha Patil rejected their mercy petition in Gandhi’s killing. Rajiv Gandhi was killed during an election rally in Sriperumbudur near Chennai on May 21, 1991 which was orchestrated ordered by LTTE. In 1999, Supreme Court had confirmed the death sentence of four accused in the case – Nalini, Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan. Later Nalini’s death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment at the intervention of Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv’s widow.

There has been a hue and cry over the decision to impose death penalty to the trio on September 9. The Tamil Nadu Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution for commuting the death sentence of the three accused. Presenting the case of the convicts, senior lawyer and politician Ram Jethmalani argued mercy petition of the assassins was rejected by the President after 11 years and four months. He said the delay is prima facie wrong and a notice seeking explanation should be sent. Hearing the petition, the Madras high court stayed hanging of the three convicts facing the gallows to eight weeks.

The political parties are intensifying their campaign to reprieve the death order and many across the country shares the opinion that the capital punishment should be recalled. Syed Abdul Rahman Geelani, who was acquitted in the Parliament attack case, argued that no law permits a death sentence and said he is against the capital punishment. The Sikh Students Federation has pleaded for the cancellation of the death penalty in a written statement. People from different walks of life including politicians, social activists, intellectuals and writers have urged the central government to remove the death sentence from the Indian penal laws.

However, it’s a big question before the Indian minds to let this happen or not? Are we going to pursue the practice of death penalty and will all the criminals who deserve gallows would face it? Capital punishment is never a punishment, rather an escape for the criminals. It relieves them from the pain they ought to undergo and denies them the opportunity to repent. So, what do you think their fate should be?

8 out of the total 14 Prime Ministers of India have been from UP, 6 out of those 8 have been from Congress…

I think your party had more than half a century and half a Dozen PM’s  to build a State…

The Reason Mulayam Singh, subsequently came to Power is because your party wasn’t exactly Gandhian in their dealings in the State.. So May be If you look at in totality the present chaos in UP is the outcome of the glorious leadership displayed by Congress in UP for about 50 years!

So Please don’t feel ashamed as yet Dear Rahul.. For Mayawati is only using the Land Acquisition Bill which your party had itself used to LOOT the Farmers many times in the Past!

When FBI was asked to divulge the information, by Right/Freedom to Information Activists about the reasons Rahul was arrested … FBI asked for a NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from Rahul Gandhi.

So Subramaniyam Swami wrote a Letter to Rahul Gandhi, ” If you have NOTHING to HIDE, Give us the Permission”

HE NEVER REPLIED!

Why did that arrest not make Headlines Rahul? You could have gone to the Media and told, ”I am ashamed to call myself an INDIAN?”.

Indira Gandhi, daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, She was named Indira Priyadarshini Nehru. She fell in love and decided to marry Feroze Khan, a family friend. Feroze Khan’s father, Nawab Khan, was a Muslim, and mother was a Persian Muslim. Jawaharlal Nehru did not approve of the inter-caste marriage for political reasons (see http://www.asiasource.org/society/indiragandhi.cfm). If Indira Nehru were to marry a Muslim she would loose the possibility of becoming the heir to the future Nehru dynasty. At this juncture, according to one story, Mahatma Gandhi intervened and adopted Feroze Khan, gave him his last name (family name/caste name) and got the name of Feroz Khan changed to Feroz Gandhi by an affidavit in England. Thus, Feroze Khan became Feroze Gandhi.
The Indira Gandhi was not Gandhi but Indira gained the surname “Gandhi” by her marriage to Feroze Gandhi. She had no relation to Mahatma Gandhi, either by blood or marriage.
Congress which is led by such a wrong people is not at all going to do anything good for India. Pls. do not depend and leave things on politicians and leaders you elect specially of Congress party.

Anna Hazare’s Dandi March moment of August 16

It is difficult not to laugh, and we imagine that will be the mood of most thinking Indians. There is something almost childishly theatrical in challenging in this way the salt monopoly of the Government.

Said Calcutta’s British-owned newspaper, “The Statesman”.

The year was 1930 and Gandhi had just sent a letter to lord Irwin, the Viceroy on his 11 point demands, which, if agreed and implemented, would make him stop his non-violent agitation against the British rule.

Earlier that year, on being questioned by Rabindranath Tagore, as to what his strategy and direction would be henceforth, Gandhi had said dejectedly:

I am furiously thinking night and day and I do not see light.

He knew the movement henceforth, from his side, had to be non-violent but strong enough. When later that year, on January 26, Congress intervened and discussed on this issue, many ideas came forth:

Sardar Vallabh bhai Patel: fight over land revenue (because of the Bardoli incidents)
Rajagopalchari: attach on sale of liquor.

In any case, the decision to plan and direct the main assault was left with Gandhi by the Congress Working Committee. In mid-February, Gandhi finally got the idea that he was “furiously” searching for. Salt.

He pictured himself heading a sea of humanity to the sea on the coastline to make salt. Something that was extremely important for everyone – from rich to poor. Police action could be against one person, but not against millions marching against the tyrannical British army.

Gandhi let the idea marinate in his mind and informed very few. In late February the framework for the disobedience movement was readied. And on March 2, Gandhi wrote the letter to Lord Irwin, where he wrote of his 11 demands, without singling out Salt. The letter was taken to the Viceroy by a Brit staying in the Ashram, Reginald Reynolds.

The 11 points of his demands were:

  1. Total Prohibition
  2. A better Rupee-Sterling rate
  3. 50% reduction in Land Revenue
  4. Abolition of Salt tax
  5. 50% reduction in military expenditure
  6. Reduction in Official Salaries
  7. Tariffs on foreign cloth
  8. Reservation of coastal shipping for Indian ships
  9. Release of political prisoners except those convicted for murder or attempted murder
  10. Abolition of Criminal Intelligence Department (and control over it by elected representatives)
  11. Right of Indians to licensed firearms

On March 5th, Gandhi announced that Salt would be the object of his Satyagraha.

It was a major shock for everyone. Jawaharlal and his father were disappointed and Patel didn’t want to associate with any of the plannings. Indulal Yagnik said of the idea that it was like “Striking the fly of Salt Act with the Sledge hammer of Satyagaraha”.

The British reaction, as described earlier, was no less dismissive.

Yet, the Salt Satyagraha was able to bring together a sea of humanity and drove the point of Independence into the minds of common people. It wasn’t able to deliver anything in concrete terms to Indians – neither freedom, neither their own representative, nor any concessions. But, it woke the Indians up – specially in the rural areas – from slumber.

Anna Hazare’ Jan Lokpal bill

When Anna Hazare goes on his hunger strike on August 16th, it will be the second Dandi March moment in our history.

I see Anna Hazare’s Jan Lokpal bill as the Salt of the the Dandi March. To stop the corruption.. plunder really, what is needed is something totally different. We need to throw the politicians in jail and have a completely new system of Governance. People like P. Chidambaram and Sonia Gandhi should be tried in court and summarily sentenced. And that is not where Jan Lokpal bill will do anything.

The blight is deep and the plunder is at a new level facilitated by a combination of politicians, media and businessmen that is unprecedented. Never before have the country’s own denuded it with such impudence since the days of Mughals and Nawabs. But the system isn’t the same, nor is the level of educated so low. It is time that such education and awareness MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Jan Lokpal bill will not solve the problems anymore than Salt Satyagraha couldn’t. But it is critical. In a country where even the educated and intellectual have lost the ability to discriminate and even understand their own present and future, it is critical that someone can give that message in a simple way but telling enough to make them stand up.

In a world of viral Youtube videos, Facebook campaigns and succinct tweets – the power of a SYMBOLIC idea, however trite and simple looking it may be – just as Gandhi used to the horror of Patel and Nehru in 1930 – cannot be over-rated!

Ironical as it may seem, educated will have to be taught a lesson in self interest by a 7th standard drop out. It is time we at least have the same humility that the villagers who walked the Dandi March, which began on March 12, 1930. Anna Hazare is no Gandhi, but the education and the intellect of Indians, for which they are known the world over, will hopefully fill in for the gap.

Jan Lokpal Bill should be followed up

Jan Lokpal Bill will set into motion a movement which will be difficult to predict or control. That is why it can also wane off unceremoniously as well. It has to be followed by something that is more concrete and a strong alternative to the present governance.

As much as the urban masses find issues with Baba Ramdev’s campaign, he neverheless – for all his faults in sophistication – appeals to rural masses like no other. Anna Hazare, on the other hand, has more appeal to the urban masses, who most often have a rudimentary and uninformed opinions and ideas of “purity”, Spirituality and “Good” – counched in very self confident words.

Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev will go down in history as those who did the equivalent of the Dandi March. But this time, we cannot let a dynastic foundation to take shape. The successors of Hazare-Ramdev combine have to be people of better judgment and integrity than people like Nehru and Azad. And that is where Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal come in. They both have impeccable credentials of intellectual ability and social good attempted by very few in India in the last many decades!
